The 1992/93 season was one of the defining campaigns in Manchester United history. Under Alex Ferguson, United won the inaugural Premier League title, finishing 10 points clear of Aston Villa and becoming English champions for the first time since 1966/67. Mark Hughes led United's league scoring with 15 goals.
A crucial moment came in November 1992 with the arrival of Eric Cantona. His creativity, confidence and ability to link midfield with attack helped transform the side, while young Ryan Giggs was developing into one of English football's outstanding talents. The 1992-94 lace-collar shirt consequently became inseparable from the beginning of Cantona's United story.
United became even stronger in 1993/94. They retained the Premier League title and defeated Chelsea 4–0 in the FA Cup Final, completing the club's first League and FA Cup Double. They also reached the League Cup Final, where defeat to Aston Villa prevented a domestic treble.
Cantona was United's leading scorer in 1993/94 with 25 goals in all competitions and 18 in the league, while Giggs, Hughes, Ince, Bruce, Pallister and new arrival Roy Keane formed the core of one of the most memorable United teams of the Ferguson era.
There is an important numbering distinction between the two seasons. Permanent Premier League squad numbers were introduced for 1993/94, giving definitive combinations such as CANTONA 7, GIGGS 11, HUGHES 10 and INCE 8. For 1992/93, traditional match-based 1–11 numbering was still used, so numbers could vary according to the starting line-up.
