The 1992/93 season was Liverpool’s first in the newly created Premier League and their 101st season of competitive football. Managed by Graeme Souness and captained by Mark Wright, Liverpool finished sixth in the Premier League.
Cup performances were mixed. Liverpool entered the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup as holders of the 1991/92 FA Cup and reached the second round, while their domestic cup campaigns ended relatively early. They also contested the 1992 Charity Shield against Leeds United.
Ian Rush remained the outstanding goalscorer. He scored 14 Premier League goals and 22 in all competitions, including five in the Cup Winners’ Cup, comfortably finishing as Liverpool’s leading scorer for the season. Mark Walters scored 13 in all competitions, while Don Hutchison reached 10.
The season was also important in the development of Steve McManaman, who became an increasingly significant first-team player and scored seven times across all competitions. The squad still contained established Liverpool figures such as John Barnes, Ronnie Whelan, Steve Nicol and Jan Mølby, alongside younger players including McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and Rob Jones.
Importantly, permanent Premier League squad numbers were not introduced until 1993/94. Liverpool therefore still used traditional match-based numbering during 1992/93, and shirts did not carry player surnames in league matches.

Ian Rush was still Liverpool’s principal goalscorer during the centenary season, finishing with 22 goals in all competitions—14 in the Premier League, five in the Cup Winners’ Cup and three across the other competitions.
He also provides the clearest historical connection between this early-Premier-League shirt and Liverpool’s hugely successful previous era. For a youth kit, however, McMANAMAN 7 is an especially attractive alternative because 1992/93 belongs to the period when McManaman was developing into one of the club’s defining young players of the 1990s.
For strict historical authenticity, a 1992/93 match-style shirt would normally carry only the number, without the surname, since player names had not yet been introduced on Premier League shirts.
