The 2006/07 season became one of VfB Stuttgart’s greatest modern campaigns. Armin Veh’s squad combined experienced internationals with an exceptional group of emerging young players, and that mixture developed into an unexpected Bundesliga title challenge.
Stuttgart finished first in the Bundesliga, securing the championship on the final matchday. The team’s late-season form was decisive: they won their final eight league matches, culminating in a 2–1 victory over Energie Cottbus that sealed the title. It was Stuttgart’s first German championship since the 1991/92 season.
One of the biggest stories was the breakthrough of Mario Gómez. The 21-year-old centre-forward scored 14 Bundesliga goals in 25 appearances, finishing as Stuttgart’s leading league scorer despite missing matches through injury. His performances established him as one of Germany’s leading young strikers.
Cacau was equally important to Stuttgart’s attack, scoring 13 Bundesliga goals, while Roberto Hilbert and Thomas Hitzlsperger each contributed seven league goals from midfield. Pavel Pardo became a major influence immediately after arriving, while captain Fernando Meira provided leadership at the heart of the side.
The season was also an important breakthrough year for Sami Khedira. Wearing No.28, the academy-developed midfielder made 22 Bundesliga appearances and scored four goals. He became increasingly important during the second half of the campaign and represented the youthful character of Stuttgart’s championship-winning team.
Stuttgart also reached the DFB-Pokal Final, creating the possibility of a domestic double. They faced 1. FC Nürnberg in Berlin but were defeated 3–2 after extra time, leaving the Bundesliga championship as the defining achievement of the season.
