The 2006/07 season became one of the most memorable campaigns in VfB Stuttgart history. Under Armin Veh, the club assembled a side that blended experienced internationals with an emerging generation of young players, earning the group a strong association with Stuttgart’s “Junge Wilde” tradition.
Stuttgart ultimately finished first in the Bundesliga with 70 points from 34 matches, recording 21 victories and scoring 61 goals. Their away record was particularly impressive: nine wins and four draws from 17 league matches.
The championship race produced a dramatic finish. Stuttgart entered the final weeks battling Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen, then put together an outstanding run of victories. On the final matchday, Stuttgart defeated Energie Cottbus 2–1, securing the club’s fifth German championship and its first Bundesliga title since 1991/92.
One of the breakout stars was Mario Gómez. Wearing No.33, the young striker scored 14 Bundesliga goals despite missing part of the campaign through injury. His performances earned him the 2007 German Footballer of the Year award and established him as one of Germany’s leading young forwards.
Cacau was another major attacking figure, scoring 13 Bundesliga goals, while Roberto Hilbert contributed seven from midfield. Pavel Pardo started all 33 of his league appearances and supplied seven assists, while Thomas Hitzlsperger was an important presence in central midfield.
The season also marked the emergence of Sami Khedira. Still only 19 years old for much of the campaign, the Stuttgart academy graduate broke into the senior side and became increasingly important during the title run-in.
