Sweden entered the 1994 FIFA World Cup under head coach Tommy Svensson and went through the group stage undefeated. They drew 2–2 with Cameroon, defeated Russia 3–1, and then drew 1–1 with eventual world champions Brazil, progressing to the knockout stage.
Their run continued with a 3–1 victory over Saudi Arabia in the Round of 16. Sweden then faced Romania in a dramatic quarter-final, drawing 2–2 after extra time before winning the penalty shootout 5–4. That victory sent Sweden into their first World Cup semi-final since 1958.
Brazil narrowly defeated Sweden 1–0 in the semi-final, but the tournament ended on a spectacular high. Sweden beat Bulgaria 4–0 in the third-place match, with goals from Tomas Brolin, Håkan Mild, Henrik Larsson and Kennet Andersson, securing the bronze medal and completing one of the finest World Cup campaigns in Swedish history.
Sweden scored 15 goals across seven matches at USA ’94. Kennet Andersson led the team with five goals, while Martin Dahlin scored four and Tomas Brolin three. The tournament also introduced a young Henrik Larsson to the World Cup stage; he scored in the 4–0 third-place victory.
