The Sunderland 2005-06 Away Retro Football Shirt recreates the distinctive change strip worn during the club’s return to the Premier League in 2005/06.
Breaking completely from Sunderland’s traditional red-and-white home identity, the away shirt uses a predominantly black design with strong red and white detailing. Period kit records identify it as Sunderland’s official away strip for the 2005/06 Premier League campaign.

Historical Context: First Premier League season following promotion as 2004/05 Championship winners
Sunderland entered 2005/06 having returned to the Premier League under Mick McCarthy. The previous campaign had brought the Football League Championship title, but the transition back to England’s top flight proved extremely difficult.
The Black Cats struggled for consistency throughout the campaign and ultimately finished 20th in the Premier League with 15 points. McCarthy left the club in March 2006, with former Sunderland defender Kevin Ball taking caretaker charge for the remainder of the season.
Despite the difficult results, several players became closely associated with this particular Sunderland generation. Dean Whitehead was one of the most consistently selected players, making 37 league starts and scoring three Premier League goals. Liam Lawrence also scored three league goals, while Argentine favourite Julio Arca continued to provide technical quality from the left side.
The squad also featured Stephen Elliott, who wore No.10, alongside Jon Stead, Anthony Le Tallec, Tommy Miller and Chris Brown. Defensively, captain Gary Breen was joined by Steven Caldwell, Danny Collins, Nyron Nosworthy and George McCartney, with Justin Hoyte arriving on loan during the campaign.
