Sheffield Wednesday entered 1991/92 having just returned to the top flight and carrying the momentum of their famous 1991 League Cup triumph over Manchester United. That Wembley victory had been secured by John Sheridan, whose goal delivered a 1–0 win.
The momentum continued in 1991/92, when Wednesday emerged as one of England’s strongest teams and finished third in the First Division, earning qualification for the UEFA Cup. Players such as David Hirst, John Sheridan, Carlton Palmer, Roland Nilsson and Nigel Worthington formed the backbone of an increasingly impressive side.
The following 1992/93 season became even more memorable. Wednesday were inaugural members of the Premier League, competed in the UEFA Cup and reached both the League Cup Final and FA Cup Final. They also defeated city rivals Sheffield United 2–1 at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final, with Chris Waddle and Mark Bright scoring.
Both domestic finals were against Arsenal. Wednesday lost the League Cup Final 2–1 before drawing the FA Cup Final 1–1 and eventually losing the replay 2–1 after extra time. David Hirst scored in the first FA Cup Final, while Waddle scored in the replay.
