The Sheffield Wednesday 1988-89 Away Jersey is one of the club’s most unusual late-1980s designs, replacing the traditional blue-and-white identity with a distinctive green, white and blue hooped colour scheme.
The shirt features broad alternating dark green and white horizontal hoops, separated by fine royal-blue lines. A green fold-over collar and matching sleeve detailing complete the design, giving the jersey a classic late-1980s appearance that is immediately distinguishable from Wednesday’s traditional home colours. Sheffield Wednesday spent the 1988/89 season in the First Division, then the highest level of English football. The club finished 15th with 42 points, recording 10 victories and 12 draws from 38 league matches.
The campaign was also a transitional one in the dugout. Howard Wilkinson left in October 1988, with Peter Eustace subsequently taking charge. Wednesday reached the fourth round of the FA Cup, while their League Cup campaign ended against Blackpool in the second round after the tie finished 3–3 on aggregate.
One of the major stories of the season was the emergence of David Hirst. Still only 21, Hirst became Wednesday’s leading league scorer with nine goals, beginning the rise that would eventually make him one of the club’s defining forwards of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
