The shirt represents an important period in Sevilla's history, including the 1998–99 promotion campaign that saw the club return to La Liga after defeating Villarreal in the promotion play-offs.
Greek playmaker Vasilios Tsiartas, wearing the iconic No.10 shirt, was the standout figure of the promotion season, scoring 18 league goals and both goals in Sevilla's 2–0 away victory over Villarreal in the play-offs. The squad also featured future Spain international Carlos Marchena, Bosnian defender Mirsad Hibić and striker Juan Carlos, while Uruguayan forward Marcelo Zalayeta joined the club for the following 1999–00 La Liga campaign.
