The Republic of Ireland 2002 Home Retro Football Shirt is closely associated with the country's memorable 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign in South Korea and Japan. Mick McCarthy's side progressed through a challenging group unbeaten, drawing 1–1 with Cameroon and Germany before defeating Saudi Arabia 3–0. Their tournament eventually ended against Spain in the Round of 16 after a 1–1 draw and penalty shootout defeat.


The campaign produced several enduring moments in Irish football history. Robbie Keane scored three World Cup goals, including his famous stoppage-time equaliser against Germany and the late penalty against Spain, while Damien Duff emerged as one of the team's most exciting attacking players. The Republic of Ireland 2002 home shirt is closely associated with the country's memorable campaign at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Mick McCarthy's side qualified through the UEFA play-offs after finishing second in a difficult qualifying group containing Portugal and the Netherlands, then defeated Iran 2–1 on aggregate to secure a place at the finals.

Ireland opened the World Cup with a 1–1 draw against Cameroon, with Matt Holland scoring the equaliser. Their second match produced one of the defining moments of the tournament when Robbie Keane scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Germany to secure another 1–1 draw. Ireland then defeated Saudi Arabia 3–0, with goals from Robbie Keane, Gary Breen and Damien Duff, to advance from Group E unbeaten.

In the Round of 16, Ireland faced Spain. Fernando Morientes gave Spain an early lead before Robbie Keane converted a 90th-minute penalty to make it 1–1. After extra time produced no further goals, Ireland were eliminated 3–2 in the penalty shootout. Despite the defeat, the tournament remains one of the most celebrated World Cup campaigns in Republic of Ireland history.

The campaign was also shaped by the highly publicised departure of captain Roy Keane from the squad before the tournament following the Saipan dispute. As a result, although Roy Keane was central to Ireland's qualification campaign, he did not play at the 2002 World Cup finals.
