Portugal entered UEFA Euro 2020 as defending champions after their historic triumph in 2016. Fernando Santos’ squad had developed considerably since that victory, combining experienced champions such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, João Moutinho and Raphaël Guerreiro with a new generation featuring Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Diogo Jota and João Félix.
Drawn into a formidable group alongside France, Germany and Hungary, Portugal finished third and qualified for the knockout stage. Cristiano Ronaldo was outstanding, scoring five goals during the group stage, including two against Hungary, one against Germany and two against France.
