Portugal arrived at the 2014 FIFA World Cup with high expectations after reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2012. Captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, the squad also featured Nani, João Moutinho, Pepe, Fábio Coentrão, Raul Meireles and emerging midfielder William Carvalho.
Portugal were placed in a difficult Group G alongside Germany, the United States and Ghana. They suffered a 4–0 defeat against eventual champions Germany before drawing 2–2 with the United States. Nani opened the scoring in that match, while Silvestre Varela scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Ronaldo’s cross.
In their final match, Portugal defeated Ghana 2–1, with Ronaldo scoring the winning goal in the 80th minute. It was his 50th international goal for Portugal. However, Portugal finished level with the United States on four points and were eliminated on goal difference.
Although the tournament itself ended earlier than expected, the shirt remains highly recognisable because of its association with Ronaldo’s captaincy, Portugal’s federation centenary and the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
