Portugal entered UEFA Euro 2012 under Paulo Bento and were drawn into a difficult group alongside Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. After losing 1–0 to Germany, Portugal defeated Denmark 3–2 and the Netherlands 2–1 to qualify for the knockout stage.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the central figure of the campaign. As captain, he scored both goals against the Netherlands in the decisive final group match before scoring the only goal in Portugal’s 1–0 quarter-final victory over the Czech Republic. He finished the tournament with three goals.
Portugal then faced defending European and world champions Spain in the semi-final. After 120 minutes without a goal, Portugal were eliminated 4–2 on penalties, bringing an impressive tournament run to an end.
The squad featured an excellent generation of Portuguese talent, with Ronaldo and Nani providing the attacking threat, João Moutinho and Raul Meireles controlling midfield, and Pepe, Bruno Alves and Fábio Coentrão forming the core of the defence.
