Manchester United reached Wembley under Ron Atkinson after a strong 1982/83 campaign that also saw the club finish third in the First Division and reach the League Cup Final.
The first FA Cup Final was played on 21 May 1983. Brighton took the lead before Frank Stapleton equalised for United and Ray Wilkins put them ahead. Gary Stevens later made it 2–2, and after extra time the match remained level. Brighton famously came extremely close to winning it in the closing moments before goalkeeper Gary Bailey denied Gordon Smith.
With penalty shootouts not used to settle the Final at that stage, the teams returned to Wembley for a replay on 26 May 1983. This time United dominated, winning 4–0. Captain Bryan Robson scored twice, 18-year-old Norman Whiteside added another, and Arnold Mühren converted a penalty.
The victory gave Manchester United their fifth FA Cup, with Robson lifting the trophy as captain. It was also the first of three occasions on which Robson would captain United to FA Cup success.
The Final and replay used traditional 1–11 match numbering, rather than permanent squad numbers. The United starting XI remained unchanged for both matches: Bailey 1, Duxbury 2, Albiston 3, Wilkins 4, Moran 5, McQueen 6, Robson 7, Mühren 8, Stapleton 9, Whiteside 10 and Davies 11.

Robson was captain, wore No.7, and produced the defining individual performance of the replay. He opened the scoring after 25 minutes and scored again shortly before half-time as United established a commanding 3–0 lead on the way to the 4–0 victory.
For an exact 1983 Final recreation, the historical numbering is unusually clear because the same starting XI and numbers were used in both the 21 May Final and 26 May replay. ROBSON 7, WHITESIDE 10, STAPLETON 9 and WILKINS 4 are therefore all firmly documented choices rather than modern approximations.
