The 1992/93 season was historically significant as Liverpool became one of the founding participants in the newly established Premier League. Managed by Graeme Souness and captained by Mark Wright, Liverpool finished sixth in the inaugural Premier League campaign.
Liverpool entered the season as reigning FA Cup holders, which qualified the club for the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. They defeated Apollon Limassol 8–2 on aggregate in the first round before being eliminated by Spartak Moscow in the second round.
Ian Rush remained Liverpool’s principal goalscorer, finishing the campaign with 22 goals in all competitions, including 14 in the league and five in the Cup Winners' Cup. One of his standout performances came in the 6–1 European victory over Apollon Limassol at Anfield, when Rush scored four times.
The squad represented an interesting transition between Liverpool generations. Established stars such as Rush, John Barnes, Ronnie Whelan and Jan Mølby remained, while younger players including Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp were becoming increasingly important to the first team.
