Ireland produced one of their most memorable modern World Cup campaigns in 2002. They progressed from Group E unbeaten after draws against Cameroon and Germany and a 3–0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Robbie Keane scored a dramatic late equaliser against Germany before scoring again against Saudi Arabia. Ireland then faced Spain in the Round of 16, where Keane converted a late penalty to force extra time before the team was eliminated in a penalty shootout.
