Lothar Matthäus wore the No.10 shirt for Bayern Munich throughout the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons, during the later stages of his remarkable second spell with the club. By this point, the former Ballon d’Or winner and Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning captain had evolved from a dynamic midfielder into an experienced libero, bringing leadership, composure and exceptional passing range to Bayern’s defence.

The 1997/98 season saw Matthäus help Bayern lift the DFB-Pokal under Giovanni Trapattoni, starting the 2–1 final victory over MSV Duisburg. A year later, with Ottmar Hitzfeld in charge, Bayern reclaimed the Bundesliga title in dominant fashion. Matthäus made 25 league appearances during that 1998/99 championship campaign and was named Germany’s Footballer of the Year in 1999.

That second season also became one of the most dramatic chapters of his Bayern career. Matthäus featured throughout the club’s 1998/99 Champions League campaign as Bayern progressed to the final against Manchester United. Although the famous final ended in heartbreaking defeat, the campaign remains inseparable from the history of this Bayern generation. DFB records credit Matthäus with ten Champions League appearances that season.
