Historical Significance: Everton’s 125th Anniversary Season
Everton entered 2003/04 under David Moyes, following an impressive seventh-place Premier League finish the previous season. Expectations were therefore higher, particularly with teenage forward Wayne Rooney having already established himself as one of English football’s most exciting young talents.
The campaign proved considerably more difficult. Everton finished 17th in the Premier League, narrowly avoiding relegation. Their league record included just nine victories from 38 matches, and the side struggled to reproduce the consistency of Moyes’ first full campaign.
Rooney remained one of the central figures despite still being only 18 during the season. He made 33 Premier League appearances and scored nine league goals, making him Everton’s leading league scorer. Tomasz Radzinski contributed eight league goals, while Duncan Ferguson remained an important experienced presence in attack.
The midfield contained several players strongly associated with Everton during this period. Thomas Gravesen was a regular presence in the centre, while Lee Carsley, Tobias Linderoth and Kevin Kilbane also featured extensively. At the back, Tony Hibbert continued his emergence from Everton’s academy, alongside players including Joseph Yobo, Gary Naysmith, David Unsworth and captain David Weir.
The season also marked the end of Rooney’s first spell at Goodison Park. After representing England at UEFA Euro 2004 during the summer, he left Everton before the beginning of the following campaign.
