Michael Zorc wore the No.8 shirt for Borussia Dortmund during the 1988/89 season, a campaign that marked a defining turning point in both his career and the club’s modern history. A Dortmund-born academy product, Zorc was appointed team captain at the beginning of the season, beginning a leadership tenure that would eventually span almost nine years.

Playing as an influential midfielder, Zorc was central to Dortmund’s memorable DFB-Pokal campaign. He featured in five cup matches and scored four goals as BVB progressed to the final in Berlin. There, Dortmund defeated Werder Bremen 4–1 to lift the trophy, with Zorc becoming the first player to raise the cup as captain. The triumph was especially significant: it was Borussia Dortmund’s first major title since 1966.

The season became the opening chapter of Zorc’s remarkable era as Dortmund captain. He would remain with his hometown club throughout his playing career and later lead BVB through Bundesliga titles and the 1997 Champions League triumph.
