The 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico was Denmark’s first appearance at a World Cup, and the tournament produced one of the country's most memorable national teams. Managed by Sepp Piontek, Denmark arrived with an exceptionally talented generation led by Michael Laudrup and Preben Elkjær.
Denmark won all three matches in a difficult group. They opened by defeating Scotland 1–0, with Elkjær scoring the winner, before producing a spectacular 6–1 victory over Uruguay. They then defeated eventual finalists West Germany 2–0, finishing top of the group with a perfect record.
The Uruguay match became one of the defining performances of the Danish Dynamite era. Elkjær scored a hat-trick while Laudrup produced one of the tournament’s memorable individual goals. Denmark's fearless attacking style turned them into one of the most admired teams at the tournament.
Their run ended unexpectedly in the Round of 16, where Spain defeated Denmark 5–1 despite the Danes initially taking the lead.
