The 2002/03 season began immediately after Leverkusen’s extraordinary 2001/02 campaign, when the club had finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League. Much of that celebrated squad remained, including Lúcio, Bernd Schneider, Carsten Ramelow, Oliver Neuville, Yıldıray Baştürk and Jens Nowotny.
However, 2002/03 proved much more difficult domestically, with Leverkusen becoming involved in a relegation battle and eventually surviving in the Bundesliga. The club nevertheless competed in the UEFA Champions League, giving this shirt a direct connection to European competition.
The following 2003/04 season produced a dramatic recovery under Klaus Augenthaler. Leverkusen finished 3rd in the Bundesliga, securing qualification for the Champions League. The team’s attacking football was highlighted by a spectacular 6–2 victory over champions Werder Bremen late in the campaign.
It was also the breakthrough season of Dimitar Berbatov, who scored 16 Bundesliga goals. Brazilian forward França contributed 14 league goals, while Bernd Schneider scored nine. The squad also contained Brazilian internationals Lúcio and Juan, Turkish playmaker Baştürk and German international Neuville.
