The 1997/98 season was a particularly strong European campaign for Christoph Daum’s Leverkusen. They finished 3rd in the Bundesliga with 55 points, scoring 66 league goals, and qualified for the following season’s UEFA Cup. Most notably, Leverkusen reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Real Madrid.
Ulf Kirsten was the outstanding goalscorer of the season. He scored 22 Bundesliga goals, finishing as the league’s leading scorer. His No.9 is firmly documented in both Bundesliga and Champions League records from the campaign.
Leverkusen improved their league position again in 1998/99, finishing Bundesliga runners-up with 63 points after a record of 17 wins, 12 draws and only five defeats. Their European campaign moved to the UEFA Cup, where they reached the second round.
Kirsten remained the principal goalscorer, scoring another 19 Bundesliga goals in 31 appearances. The squad was strengthened by Zé Roberto, who made 32 league appearances and scored four goals, while Emerson, Jens Nowotny, Carsten Ramelow and Stefan Beinlich remained important members of the side.
