The AEK Athens 1997–98 Home Retro Football Shirt recalls a dramatic season for the Yellow-Blacks. AEK finished third in the Alpha Ethniki after challenging strongly during the first half of the campaign, while remarkably completing a clean sweep of their four league derbies against Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. In Europe, the club reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup before narrowly losing to Lokomotiv Moscow.

Demis Nikolaidis led the side with 19 league goals and 21 in all competitions, establishing himself as the standout attacking figure of the campaign. The squad also featured established AEK names including Toni Savevski, Michalis Kasapis and Christos Kostis, while the end of the season marked the retirement of legendary defender Stelios Manolas after 19 years of service to the club.

The shirt is instantly recognisable for its dramatic black-and-yellow graphic treatment rather than a conventional striped design. A pixelated transition moves between the darker and brighter sections of the body, while an oversized crowned double-headed eagle motif dominates the upper part of the shirt. Combined with additional yellow graphic detailing across the chest and sleeves, the design transforms AEK’s traditional colours and historic eagle identity into one of the club’s most distinctive late-1990s home shirts.

Left-Back / Midfielder

A strong defensive choice and one of AEK’s established Greek internationals of the era.

DONIS 28

Winger

A distinctive alternative representing the experienced Greek international’s return to AEK during the 1997–98 campaign.

Best Printing Choice: NIKOLAIDIS 11

Second Choice: SAVEVSKI 8

We recommend NIKOLAIDIS 11 as the standout printing choice for the AEK Athens 1997–98 Home Retro Football Shirt. Demis Nikolaidis was AEK’s leading scorer during the campaign, scoring 19 league goals and 21 in all competitions as the club finished third in the Alpha Ethniki and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. His performances during the season, combined with his lasting status as one of AEK’s most celebrated modern players, make NIKOLAIDIS 11 the strongest combination of period authenticity and collector appeal.

Our second recommendation is SAVEVSKI 8. Toni Savevski was already an established figure in AEK’s hugely successful 1990s generation and offers an especially strong choice for long-term supporters of the club. His No.8 provides a direct connection to one of the most recognisable players of AEK’s golden era.
