Entering the campaign as three-time consecutive Greek champions, AEK also made history in Europe by reaching the newly established UEFA Champions League group stage. After defeating Rangers 3–0 on aggregate in qualifying, AEK entered an exceptionally strong group alongside Ajax, AC Milan and Casino Salzburg, even holding reigning European champions Milan to a goalless draw in Athens. The squad featured some of the most recognisable names in Greek football of the era, including Vasilis Tsiartas, Toni Savevski, Dimitris Saravakos and Christos Kostis, alongside Georgian international Temur Ketsbaia.
